Jake and Amir (YouTube Web Series)

A day in the life of Jake and Amir

Jake: …there’s only one photo up here and it appears to be you at a dog pound, bottomless, with peanut butter all over your flaccid penis. Your surrounded by ten puppies and each one of them is ignoring you.

Amir: I need to untag it!

Jake: You need to delete it from the internet entirely! You’re wearing a shirt that’s like eight sizes too big and it reads ‘don’t be offended if you’re a dog lover, so am i’ and the caption of the photo is “who wants to see me get my D wet?’ subcaption: ‘you’re gay if you click this’ subcaption: ‘delete’ subcapti-

Amir: SUBCAPTION! SUB TAPTION, CAPTAIN!

Origin

Jake and Amir is a comedy webseries started by CollegeHumor in the late 2000’s. What started as two friends doing improv on camera at work, developed into an 8 year, 512 episode run. Although that may sound like a lot, remember that these episodes are short and sweet, typically between 1-5 minutes. If you we’re around in the earlier days of YouTube, there is a good chance you saw these two’s videos, especially if you we’re searching in the comedy genre.

In an interview with Reddit, the comedy duo we’re asked if there was a video to show people to become a fan and Amir responded “I’m not sure if there is a specific video. I think what works well about the Jake and Amir web series is that they’re so fast that you really just have to pop them in your mouth like jellybeans or they won’t catch.” What will hook you in after indulging in a few short episodes is that you’ll begin to realize how intricate the writing really is. They have mastered the art of “bickering” and truly captured how it feels to deal with that one friend that you just can’t stand. Amir may be “the annoying one” in most episodes(One Almond, Album, Bread) but some of their most well-written and funniest episodes are when Jake shows how insecure he really is (Vest, Muscle Tee, Tinder).

With hilarious guest stars like Ben Schwartz, Thomas Middleditch, Rick Fox and more, they do a good job of keeping the sketches funny and fresh. The last thing I’ll add is that the more you watch, you’ll begin to see a surprising amount of depth in the characters. Personalities and running jokes.

Something interesting I’ve noticed about their videos is that you’ll either love them or hate them, with very little room for in between. You’ll either see them as two comedians going on hilarious ranting tangents or two idiots arguing over nonsense. It’s a different brand of comedy that might be a little too quirky or “out there” for your average viewer. And although I praise their writing, they’re moments where their comedic level is more suited for a kindergartener. It’s also worth mentioning that you can only watch so much Jake and Amir before getting overwhelmed from the constant fast-paced squabbling.

Today, Jake and Amir run their own podcast network “Headgum” and run their own advice podcast “If I Were You” that I also highly recommend,

It’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you can appreciate verbal jousting, word play and rhyming any timing.
